Moving Checklist
Before you gather your stuff, gather your thoughts. Plan ahead, instead of at the last minute. And be prepared for anything. With this checklist, you can stay organized during your move and save yourself some headaches along the way. Because while we have all the moving and packing supplies you'll ever need, we're all out of aspirin.
One Month Until Move
- If necessary, give your landlord notice.
- Contact telephone company to set up reconnection/installation.
- Inform gas and electric providers that you will be the new property owner.
- Start collecting packing
Two Weeks Until Move
- Book moving company or rental truck.
- If necessary, arrange moving transit insurance.
- Inform people of your change of address.
- Arrange for post office to forward your mail.
One Week Until Move
- Arrange for final bills to be paid.
- Have meters read and pay any outstanding amount.
- Confirm arrangements with utility companies.
- Arrange the exchange of keys. Collect yours as soon as possible.
- Collect old blankets to put down
One Day Until Move
- Seal and label all boxes.
- When possible, move items toward location of moving truck, like the garage.
- Pack a container for emergency supplies.
- Defrost fridge/freezer.
- Finish cleaning the house or
Day of Move
- Disconnect any remaining appliances.
- Close and lock doors and windows.
- Turn off all lights.
- Account for all items at new location.
Storage Tips
You've done all the packing. You've done all the moving. And now, in addition to facing a big empty space, you're facing an even bigger question: how do you fill it? Well, that's really up to you. But having been in the self-storage business as long as we have, we've seen it all. And we have some thoughts that might help you answer that big question:
- If shelves held stuff out there, they can store stuff in here
- Drawers: they're not just for socks anymore
- While you're not sitting on couch cushions, something breakable should
- Store long things vertically
- Store glass and mirrors between mattresses
- Place smaller and lighter things on top
- Remove wheels from everything
- Start at the back of the unit, using the front area for odd shaped objects
- Chairs make the perfect chairs for other chairs
- Group like items as much as possible
- Use hand carts and save your back
- Avoid using plastic garbage bags for storage, as they can promote mildew
